Colombo : Delegations from 20 countries will attend the Fourth Asia-Pacific Solidarity Meeting with Cuba, to be run for the first time this weekend in this capital.
Almost 100 delegates, included a Cuban representative led by Cuban Science Academy president Dr. Ismael Clark, plus 150 participants from the host country, have already confirmed their attendance.
Attendees are from Vietnam, Laos, China, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Japan, Cuba and Sri Lanka.
The first of those meetings of solidarity and friendship with Cuba in Asia and Oceania took place in Kolkatta, India, in 1995.
The second one was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1997, and the third was in India again in 2006.
The opening ceremony of the event will run Saturday, June 14, at the Galaradi Hotel Conference Center, with plenary session and debates in two working commissions.
One debate will be dedicated to analyzing 50 years of the Cuban Revolution, its achievements and current challenges.
The second panel will discuss the importance of press for the movement of friendship with Cuba, the creation of a network of solidarity with the island, alternative media and the use of new technologies.
Parallel to this meeting are collateral activities of support to the event like an essay course on Cuba, sports marathons, screenings of documentaries in the national television and a Cuban cinema festival in three cities: Colombo, Kandy and Matara.
