By Xinhua,

Baghdad : Iraqi policemen foiled a suicide bomb attack attempt in a town in Diyala province on Sunday and killed the woman attacker, a provincial police source said.

“A woman wearing an explosive vest tried to enter the town council of Wajihiyah, but policemen guarding the building shot herdead before she reaches her target,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The guards opened fire at the suspected woman, who did not stop after being ordered not to approach the checkpoint outside the council of the town, some 80 km northeast of Baghdad, blowing up her explosive-belt, said the source, adding that the a civilian was wounded in the incident.

The attack attempt in the province came as the U.S. and Iraqi security forces are conducting major offensives against extremist Sunni and Shiite militiamen across the war-torn country.

Diyala province, stretching from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants in Iraq network.
