47th annual session of AALCO kicks off, Iran present

New Delhi : Forty-Seventh annual session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) kicked off Monday in New Delhi with the participation of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The five-day (June 30-July 4) session was inaugurated by Hansraj Bharadwaj, India’s Union Minister for Law and Justice.

Mehdi Nabizadeh, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to New Delhi, and six-member high level delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran are taking part.

Fifteen topics, including deportation of Palestinians, legal protection of migrant workers, World Trade Organization, international terrorism and environment and sustainable development are taken for deliberations at the session.

Further, a one-day Special Meeting in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will be held on 2nd July to discuss on cluster munitions, landmines and private military and security companies from an international law perspective, as these issues are of high concerns for the Member States.

Dignitaries attending the session are from Pakistan, Oman, Yemen, Ghana, Saudi Arabia and Kenya.

AALCO is an inter governmental organization formed in 1956, initially to serve as an advisory board to member states on matters on international law.

Membership of the Organization is open to all Asian and African States that desire to participate in the Organization in accordance with its Statutes and Statutory Rules (Article 23 of the Statutes).

AALCO presently have forty-eight countries as its members, comprising almost all the major States from Asia and Africa.

Observers from non-Member States, regional, inter-regional and international organizations and specialized agencies and national liberation movements recognized by the United Nations are admitted as Observers to attend the Annual Sessions of the Organization.

Australia and New Zealand have the status of Permanent Observers.
