Socialists Still Head Spanish Polls

Madrid : Despite a hard-fought campaign by the main Spanish candidates for the March 9 elections, voter intention has not changed and the PSOE, Spanish Socialist Workers Party keeps its 5 point leads over its closes rival Popular Party.

The latest daily “Pulsometro” poll by Spanish SER network gives PSOE 44.5 percent of votes and PP 39.5 percent. The levels Thursday were 44 percent for PSOE and 39 for PP.

Today’s analysis includes the impact of Monday’s TV debate between current President of Government Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (PSOE) and Mariano Rajoy (PP).

Analysts gave the edge in the debate, the first of its kind in Spain in 15 years, to Rodriguez Zapatero, and they will debate again Monday.

The SER poll showed 4.7 percent of votes for Izquierda Unida the third strongest political force in Spain-, 2.5 percent for Convergencia y Union, 1.5 for Catalonian Ezquerra Republicana Cataluña, and 1.2 for the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV).
