Brussels : Indian Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar will be among the 50 women leaders who will meet here Thursday to discuss issues of security and women’s empowerment.

The one-day event, hosted by EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, is being organised to coincide with the International Women’s Day March 8, reported EuAsiaNews.

“Women are often the first to suffer when human security is threatened, whether by war, poverty or natural disasters. We must ensure that we fully address the impact on women of new threats to security like climate change and fundamentalism,” Ferrero-Waldner said in a statement Tuesday.

Former Sri Lanka president Chandrika Kumaratunga and Nepalese Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan are the other South Asian leaders who will participate in the conference titled “Women: Stabilising an Insecure World”.
