United Nations : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stressed on Thursday the importance of women’s equality in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Ban was the first to speak in a ceremony celebrated in UN headquarters on the eve of International Woman’s Day, Saturday, March 8.

Women, with access to finances, credit, technologies and markets, tend to extend their businesses and to efficiently contribute to sustainable economic growth, as well as to development, the diplomat expressed.

In his opinion, women contribute new perspectives and policies to decision-making, investing in them is not only correct but is also advantageous for opportunities of education and employment for the next generation, he stressed.

Ban spoke in favor of financing infrastructure projects that respond to the needs of women in underdeveloped countries.

The statements coincide with the call by UNIFEM (UN Development Fund for Women) to the governments of Latin America to invest more in the progress of women.
