Pakistani protest blasphemous cartoons, film

Islamabad : In protest of republication of blasphemous cartoons in European newspapers and anti-Quraan film, a token strike was observed in Pakistans largest commercial city and protests were held across the country.

The protest call was given by Jamait-e-Islami (JI), a party of the six-party religious alliance Mutahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and political groups across the country. JI supporters after Friday prayer held protest demonstrations in Islamabad, Karachi, Hyderabad, Multan, Lahore, Quetta and several other parts of the country. They demanded the government to cut diplomatic ties with Denmark and boycott European Union (EU) products.

In Karachi, business community endorsed the protest call and all business centers and bazaars remained closed while, traffic was thin on roads.

Security has been beefed up on the occasion and police personnel had been deployed at all foreign offices, food chains and churches.
