Ramallah : The Palestinian gunman who carried out the deadly attack on a Jewish religious academy in West Jerusalem late on Thursday was identified on Friday as Alaa Abu Duhaim.

Abu Duhaim, 25, who was a resident of the district of Al-Mukabbar in the holy city, had worked as taxi driver at the religious institute where he opened fire at the students killing eight and wounding scores others, Israel Radio said.

Israel, following the attack, declared a maximum state of alert throughout the country, blocked all gateways and roads leading to the West Bank and prevented Palestinians aged less than 45 from performing prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
