By Prensa Latina

Beirut : Lebanese presidential elections scheduled for Tuesday were delayed on Monday until March 25, the 16th such postponement, thus prolonging the political crisis in this country.

The announcement on the postponement came in a brief statement issued by the Lebanese Parliament”s Secretariat General, Nabih Berri.

Lebanon has been living a tense political crisis for over a year. This situation has taken the lives of at least ten political figures since 2005, reaching its most critical stage last November 23 when Syrian President Emile Lahoud left office without a successor being elected.

Since then, the country has left the presidential seat empty and the parliamentary majority and opposition in conflict.

After intense debates, the parties agreed to elect Army commander Gen. Michel Suleiman as a consensus president.

However, other points such as the appointment of the ministers in the proposed national unity government and the creation of a new election law continue to be a source of contradiction among the Lebanese political rivals.
