New Delhi : The union cabinet Wednesday revoked president’s rule in Nagaland to pave way for the formation of a new government after the assembly polls.
The decision to revoke president’s rule in the northeastern state was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The state was placed under president’s rule Jan 3, just two months ahead of the scheduled assembly elections.
Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), a coalition of parties led by Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) has staked claim to form the government under the leadership of Neiphiu Rio, who was the chief minister of the state till the central rule was imposed.
The DAN has the support of four Independents and two members each from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). With this, the total number of legislators supporting the DAN is 33.
The Congress, which won 23 seats in the 60-member assembly, has decided to sit in the opposition. It has chosen I. Imkong as its legislature party leader in the assembly.
