UN: Congo Conflict Hits Women Hardest

By Prensa Latina

United Nations : UN Reporter on Violence against Woman Yakin Erturk said on Wednesday that the armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a challenge in the fight against
sexual violence in that country.

When presenting a report before the UN Council of Human Rights in Geneva, the Turkish professor pointed out that, despite the measures adopted by Congo authorities to bring peace and stability, this conflict chiefly affects women.

The famous university professor indicated that the conflict seems to have unleashed fantasies of brutality between civilians.

Ertuk warned that to separately fight violence associated with war, would be to reinforce the war against women in times of peace.

The reporter specifically spoke of sexual atrocities committed by armed irregular groups in east Democratic Congo, which are aimed at destroying women psychologically and physically.

In order to face this situation, the official recommended the government of Kinshasa institute a policy of zero tolerance and punish all those responsible for those acts, and that the countries that contribute troops to the UN in DRC redouble efforts to end impunity.
