Cuba Seeks Support to Release The Five

By Prensa Latina

Geneva : Cuba sought support from the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on Tuesday to speed the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorists serving unjust terms in US prisons.

The proposal was submitted during an interactive debate with the president-rapporteur of the Group on Mercenary Use, the president-rapporteur for Arbitrary Detention, and the rapporteurr on Toxic Products and Waste.

Cuban delegate Yuri Gala reminded that three years ago the Advisory Council for Human Rights issued Opinion No.19/2005 unequivocally finding the arrest of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez “arbitrary”.

The Five Cuban heroes were jailed for trying to protect the Cuban people from terrorist actions organized by Miami-based anti-Cuba Mafia, Gala explained.

The text calls for Washington to adopt the necessary measures to end this situation. By contrast, “they continue to manipulate the case in US courts from a political viewpoint,” adds Gala.

He also exposed further US steps to consolidate the arbitrary detention imposed on the Five and that the wives of Rene and Gerardo, Olga Salanueva and Adriana Perez, are denied the right to visit their husbands.

Cuba also asked the Working Group to visit the United States to verify their case and to give due attention to its request to free the five Cuban anti-terrorists.
