14 Maoist guerrillas shot dead in Chhattisgarh

Raipur : At least 14 Maoist guerrillas were shot dead in an encounter early Tuesday in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, a senior police officer said.

The encounter took place in a forested area under the jurisdiction of the Pamer police station. A joint team of Chhattisgarh police and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh Greyhounds cordoned off the rebel hideout and opened fire.

“Heavily armed rebels, who were about 35 in number, retaliated but they found it tough to handle the police operation. We killed 14 armed cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) when they tried to sneak into the deep forest,” Ankit Garg, district superintendent of police told IANS by phone.

He informed that the police had recovered 14 bodies. The guerrillas were armed and some had AK-47s. The casualty figures might go up once the search operation was finished.
