Johannesburg : Disgraced former cricket captain Hansie Cronje will not be posthumously inducted into South Africa’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Naas Botha, a former Rugby Union player and the head of the Sports Hall of Fame, said that Cronje would not be eligible as he was banned from cricket for life for match fixing.
“The bottom line is that whoever is inducted cannot cast any shadow of doubt on his sport whatsoever and cannot have brought the sport into disrepute,” Botha was quoted as saying to the Sondag newspaper Sunday.
“So unfortunately Hansie (Conje) would not be eligible,” he said.
Over 90 South African sports stars have been inducted into the newly created Hall of Fame. But Cronje, who died in a plane crash near the George airport June 1, 2002, will not feature anywhere there.
“I have nothing against Hansie, but the criteria are clear,” he said.
