Palakkad (Kerala) : An attempted break-in at a guest house where People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supremo Abdul Nasir Madani was staying created a flutter here, with his supporters alleging it could have been an attempt to murder.
The incident came to notice of Madani and his supporters Thursday morning. He had come to Palakkad town, the headquarters of Palakkad district, to attend a party function and was staying at the Kerala State Electricity Board guest house.
Madani, founder of the state PDP, walked free from Coimbatore prison last August after he was acquitted in the Coimbatore blast case. The serial blasts Feb 14, 1998, ahead of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani’s poll rally, left 60 people dead and around 250 injured.
“Madani was getting death threats after he was released from the jail. We have handed over one such threat letter to the home minister recently,” said PDP working chairman Poonthura Siraj.
Confirming that he indeed was receiving death threats, Madani, however, said he did not consider the break-in attempt as a serious issue.
The state government provides police protection to Madani.
Palakkad district superintendent of police Vijay Sakhre, who visited the guest house, said the incident was an attempted theft. He said a police team led by an assistant superintendent of police will probe the incident.
