Jerusalem municipality OKs construction of Al-Maghariba gate bridge

By KUNA,

Ramallah : Jerusalem Municipality approved on Monday a plan to build a bridge at Al-Maghariba gate, one of Al-Aqsa Mosque entrances.

A municipality-affiliated committee tasked with planning and construction ratified the project after turning down objections by Israel’s legislative assembly, the Knesset.

The bridge is short in length and based on several pillars. According to the planned project, the women section at Buraq Wall will be expanded.

Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski’s temporarily halted excavation work at Al-Maghariba gate last year, in a bid to taper off anger among Palestinians who demonstrated against the project.

He said “an open dialogue” with the Palestinians would facilitate execution of the venture, “provided they would not desecrate sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, ” as he claimed.

The bridge would accomodate up to 300 police personnel entering into the holy mosque in one batch. A large number of Jews will also be able to venture into the main yard of the site easily.
