OIC condemns world’s impotence to implement UN resolutions on Palestine

By NNN-Bernama,

Dubai : The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has rapped the world community for failing to implement various resolutions on the long-standing Palestinian issue.

“The international community has remained impotent to implement the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly that recognize and support the Palestinian people’s right to return, to self-determination and to the establishment of their own independent Palestinian state,” says OIC secretary-general Prof Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.

He said this in a statement issued in Jeddah Thursday on the 60th anniversary of the Palestinian tragedy, also referred to as “Nakba” or catastrophe in Arabic, a period which saw hundreds of thousands of Palestinians being driven out of their homes, land and villages during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

Dr Ihsanoglu commended the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in fighting for their cause “despite Israel’s continued aggression and attempts to eliminate the Palestinian people from memory”.

“Despite the trials of these decades and the accompanying humiliation, hardship, and bitterly painful recollections, the Palestinian people have shown a rare example of sacrifice, patience, firm belief in their just cause, commitment to their right to return and to establish their own independent state,” the OIC official said.

The international community, he said, was called upon today, more than at any other time in the past, to see to the implementation of resolutions that could help end the plight of the Palestinians.

Dr Ihsanoglu reaffirmed the OIC’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people. “The OIC appeals to all Islamic states and peoples to continue their support in all its forms to enable the Palestinian people to recover their national rights, including the refugees’ right to return to their towns, homesteads and properties and to establish their independent Palestinian state with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital,” he said.
