Syria Backs AL Mediation in Lebanon Crisis

By Prensa Latina,

Beirut : The Syrian government welcomed on Wednesday mediation efforts made by AL (the League of Arab States) in the Lebanese political crisis, a Foreign Ministry source said.

During a special meeting on Sunday, a committee led by Qatari Foreign Minister Hamad Bin Yasem Bin Yaber al Zani was created, also including Foreign ministers of Morocco, Algiers, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Djibouti, and AL Secretary General Amr Moussa.

Al Akhbar daily described the commission as “the last chance for commitment or chaos.”

The AL delegation which arrived in Beirut today is trying to make the opposition and the majority in Parliament to accept the initiative proposed by them early this year.

The AL project has three key elements: the immediate election of the president, the formation of a government of national unity, with ten representatives of each political group and restructuring of the current legislation.
