Ramallah : Israeli Radio said Sunday that the Israeli army removed a military barrier that was setup at the southern entrance of Hebron, south of the West Bank.
The radio added that the removal of the barrier came within the framework of gestures of goodwill, which Israel pledged to the United States and the Quartet Committee a month ago.
The Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak had announced during the visit of U.
S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice two months ago that Israel would remove 50 sand barriers in the West Bank in order to facilitate the lives of Palestinians.
The Israeli forces removed another barrier about a month ago that was erected between Ramallah and Jericho and a number of dirt berms, which did not contribute to easing the movement of Palestinians, especially in light of military checkpoints erected between the main West Bank cities estimated at around some 550 barriers.
The Israeli step, which had been considered by the Palestinian Authority as insufficient, prompted Israeli settlers in Hebron to protest such move, claiming that removing the barrier would endanger their security.
