Council okays anti-terrorism ordinance

Dhaka : A meeting of the council of advisers Sunday approved Anti- Terrorism Ordinance-2008 with a view to curb terrorism in the country.

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed chaired the meeting held at his office here attended by the members of the council of advisers and special assistants to the Chief Adviser.

After the meeting, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim explaining the background of the ordinance told the journalists that under the ordinance any such act of a person or persons committed at home or abroad against the country, its people and sovereignty as well as state property will be considered as an act of terrorism and punishable offence.

He said the ordinance has kept provision of awarding death penalty, life imprisonment, three to twenty year imprisonments along with pecuniary measures against the offenders depending on the gravity of their act of terrorism.

The council also discussed a proposal on formulating a separate pay scale for the employees of Bangladesh Bank and sent it back to the Law Ministry for re-examination.

Cabinet Secretary, Press Secretary and Secretaries concerned were present.
