Pakistani, Indian diplomats wrap up talks

Islamabad : Senior Pakistani and Indian diplomats, who met in Islamabad on Tuesday ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers, expressed satisfaction at the progress made in the dialogue so far, officials said.

The foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India exchanged views on carrying forward the Composite Dialogue process, a statement from the Foreign Ministry said.

“The talks were held in a friendly and constructive atmosphere,” it said.

Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, Salman Bashir, led the Pakistani delegation while the Indian delegation was led by Foreign Secretary, Shivshankar Menon.

The two sides discussed eight segments of the Composite Dialogue including peace and security, confidence building measures, Kashmir, terrorism and drugs trafficking, economic and commercial cooperation, promotion of friendly exchanges, dispute over the world highest battle Siachen, waters boundaries and the controversial Wullar Barrage.

Indian Foreign Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, arrived in Islamabad for talks with his Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir, to be held on Wednesday.

Mukherjee, who last travelled to Pakistan in February 2007, is scheduled to meet President Musharraf before his talks with Qureshi on Wednesday. He will also meet Prime Minister Gilani afterwards.

The Indian minister will also meet PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N Nawaz Sharif.
