Syria says it is involved in peace talks with Israel

Damascus : Syria announced on Wednesday that it was involved in peace talks with Israel under Turkish sponsorship.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted an official source of the Foreign Ministry as saying Syria and Israel had begun indirect peace talks under Turkish auspices.

The informal negotiations were held after the two sides expressed desire to resume the talks for sake of achieving comprehensive peace in the region on the basis of theme of the Madrid conference — alluding to the Arab-Israeli conference that was held in the early 90s on the basis of swapping peace for land.

The sources expressed appreciation for the Turkish leadership for playing a go-between role between the two sides.

Syria aspires to liberate the Golan Heights, caputured by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

The Israelis had crafted peace deals with the Egyptians and the Jordanians.
