According to reports from authorities in Bamako, the capital, Tuareg nomadic ethnic guerrillas, known as blue men of the desert because of the color of their clothes, attacked a military post in northern Abeibara, bordering Algeria, with at least 32 people killed and an undetermined number of wounded.
Expressing great concern for these clashes, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said “the latest incident stresses the urgency to find an immediate, lasting solution to this recurrent conflict, so that the country is able to focus on its development and on the consolidation of democracy.”
He said to be looking forward to a detailed report on the situation in Mali to be prepared by his special representative for Western Africa, Said Djinnit, who is expected to visit the country soon.
The Tuareg, who are displaced between Mali and Niger, signed a peace pact with the government of Bamako, but some dissident factions resumed clashes, arguing that the other party had failed to comply with the agreement. t
