Maputo : The government of Mozambique decreed the state of emergency Friday, because of the exodus of thousands of people that started to return to Mozambique fearing the violence that started in South Africa, because of xenophobia.
Mozambican Foreign Affairs Minister Oldemiro Baloi announced the activation of the National Center of Emergency Operations (CENOE) to give an answer to a lot of people.
Baloi said that 600 individuals came from South Africa Wednesday, but the ones who decided to escape from the violence there are almost 10,000.
The Mozambican consulate in Johannesburg sheltered hundreds of citizens in tents, and adopted measures to transfer them at the other side of the border.
Baloi said that at least there are 5 Mozambican dead citizens as a result of the disturbances started in South Africa last week.
Humanitarian sources said 40 foreigners died because of the violence against immigrants in South Africa.
Baloi said the exodus will get worse, since there are thousands of Mozambican citizens still sheltered in South African centers waiting for the chance to go back to Mozambique.
