Riyadh : Consulates of member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have organized a celebration marking the 27th anniversary of the GCC under sponsorship of Makkah Amir, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal.
Kuwaiti Consul in Jeddah Ali Al-Haifi told KUNA the celebratory gathering, held last night, was the first time to be organized in the Red Sea city.
In addition to the sponsorship of Prince Khaled, the event was attended by Jeddah Governor Prince Meshaal Bin Majed Bin Abdel Aziz and the director of the Saudi Foreign Ministry branch in Jeddah, Ambassador Mohammad Al-Tayeb.
The idea of holding the celebration had been raised by the GCC states consultates based in Jeddah and approved by the foreign ministries of the council’s states, Al-Haifi said.
The celebratory gathering was attended by Arab, foreign consuls, GCC countries’ citizens, prominent economic and media figures.
The GCC was founded on May 25, 1981, and was proclaimed in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates.
The regional bloc, founded in shadow of a regional war between Iran and Iraq, was established to foster inter-Gulf relations, establish close cooperation and integration among the six member states in many fields including the security, military, economic, cultural and educational domains.
The GCC groups Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman. Yemen is represented in some sub-committees.
