London : Indian diplomat Shashi Tharoor, former United Nations Assistant Secretary General, criticized the plan of US Republican candidate John McCain of establishing a “league of democracies” for humanitarian interventions on the fringes of the UN.
In an opinion article published by British newspaper The Guardian Tuesday, Tharoon questioned the validity of the initiative, which McCain explained himself to French newspaper Le Monde in another article published in March.
“Ready to create a new league of democracies, which country would we leave out? Perhaps Russia, a former superpower, or China, a future superpower? Two countries without which a world of peace and prosperity would not be imagined”, said Tharoon.
During his first year as President of the US, McCain wants to form a league of nations sharing the same values, responding to humanitarian crises without the hindrance of being paralyzed by the UN Security Council due to some of its members, such as Russia or China.
Tharoon doubts all the democratic countries accepted as members of such a league, especially if that would mean to lose vital or important commercial partners, natural resource suppliers, or become an enemy of neighboring countries which are not democratic.
“India, for instance, might consider solidarity with other former colonies or developing countries, and the democracies of the southeast of Asia perhaps prefer their own regional alliance,” he added.
“It is a moment to renew and strengthen the UN, when the unipolar moment left after the “cold war” left the way for multiple power centers and an emergent superpower so a system of rules and laws universally applicable to join the countries in an international community is more necessary than ever,” he concluded.
