Katmandu : In a historic meeting members of the Nepal Constituent Assembly were sworn in at a confidential ceremony held at Birendra International Convention Center in this capital.
The 601 AC representatives will hold the first session of this historic Forum on Wednesday 28 to abolish the monarchy and declare the Himalayan state a Democratic Federal Republic.
The Assembly was born from áApril 10 elections and will put an end to the last surviving Hindu kingdom and will order King Gyanendra to abandon the Narayanhiti Royal Palace.
The first 575 deputies will swear-in while the three main parties are in favor of appointing the other 26 posts that could be shared among representatives from minority indigenous communities and experts in constitutional affairs.
While Nepal is ready to enter a new era of its history the acting government stepped up security around Birenda, AC headquarters, and forbade demonstrations.
Not to be left out of the action, Washington sent its deputy undersecretary for Southern and Central Asia Evan A. Feigenbaum, who met the main parties’ leaders.
In addition the acting government declared a three-day holiday May 28’30 for the people to celebrate the Declaration of the New Republic.
