Chandigarh : A Punjab police constable died after he shot himself in the chest early Sunday in a high-security zone, the police said. It has not yet been ascertained whether it is a case of suicide or accidental death.

“Bal Mohammed, 42, was posted near the officers’ flats in sector 39 and was on night patrol. He shot himself near the heart with his rifle at around 1 a.m. Sunday,” Gurmeet Singh, investigating officer of the case, told IANS.

“Mohammed was found dead, lying in a pool of blood by his colleague Harmail Singh,” Gurmeet Singh said.

Mohammed is survived by his wife and four daughters who stay in a village in Ropar district in Punjab, some 40 km from here.

“Right now we do not know whether it was suicide or a result of accidental firing as our investigation is on. A team of forensic experts was also called on the spot and we are waiting for their report,” Singh said.

The body of the policeman has been kept at the government hospital here and will be handed over to the family members after the post-mortem examination, the police said.
