Lusaka : Zambian opposition candidate Michael Sata challenged presidential election results and demanded from the Electoral Comission a new vote recount in the wake of the victory of acting President Rupiah Banda, from the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy.
Elections were held on Thursday, with Banda proclaimed as the winner with 40 percent of the votes, while the leader of the Patriotic Front won 38 percent, followed by Hakainde Hichilema (20 percent) and Godfrey Miyanda (1 percent).
Sata urged the Electoral Commission to present legal documents before the Supreme Court proving the triumph of Banda, claiming vote rigging in 78 of the 150 constituencies.
The elections were called by acting president Rupiah Banda to replace late Levy Mwanawasa, who died from a stroke in August.
Zambia will hold general elections in 2011, when the late head of State was supposed to end his term.
