Nepalese ‘Buddha boy’ resurfaces after year-long absence

By DPA,

Kathmandu : A Nepalese teenager dubbed the “Buddha boy” has resurfaced in the southern part of the country a year after he disappeared from his meditation place, police said Tuesday.

Ram Bahadur Bomjam, 18, captured the imagination of Nepalese in 2005 when he reportedly meditated in a jungle for several months without food, water or sleep.

He quietly left the site in a jungle in southern Nepal last year after thousands of people had made their way to get a glimpse of him.

“Bomjam appeared in front of thousands of people, preaching non-violence,” police officials in Bara district, about 90 km south of the capital Kathmandu, said Tuesday.

“Bomjam claimed that he was trying to bring peace to country through meditation,” the police officer said, adding he planned to hold several more gatherings in the coming weeks.

Whether Bomjam family’s claims of his powers are real or not has been the subject of debate. While some remain skeptical, others leave offerings, including hundreds of thousands of rupees at Bomjam’s jungle location.
