The police arrested Paul Allen, a middle aged man who worked at the orphanage in the temple city of Puri, some 56 km from here, for abusing orphans aged 13-17. The orphanage is run by the Mary Ellen Berger Foundation.

Allen allegedly abused about a dozen boys over a period of one year, the officer in charge of Sadar police station Debi Prasad Das told IANS.

Allen was absconding ever since Mary Ellen lodged a complaint with the police Nov 5.

The police nabbed him at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and brought him to Puri where he was medically examined and interrogated, he said.

“We arrested him (Allen) today (Thursday) and produced him in court,” Das said.

“The court refused to grant him bail and remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days,” he added.

Allen has, however, not harmed any girls, he said.

He also could not show legal documents such as visa or passport in support of his stay in India, he said.

Mary Ellen Berger Foundation is a non-government organisation that runs a number of orphanages in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.

In Puri, the orphanage run by the foundation houses about 40 girls and 35 boys.
