Palestinian Reconciliation Threatened

By Prensa Latina,

Ramallah : Refusal of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to hold separate talks with the Islamic group Hamas is hindering Egypt’s initiative to achieve reconciliation among 12 Palestinian factions.

An official PNA in Ramallah said that Al-Fatah Leader Mahmoud Abbas rejected a proposal to talk with the Islamic Resistance Movement in Cairo prior to a national meeting.

Abbas says the talks are useless amid growing accusations and distrust and favored joint talks with the other 11 organizations.

PNA Information Minister and Al-Fatah member Riyadh al-Maliki confirmed last Tuesday that Egyptian Chief of Intelligence, General Omar Suleiman, called both groups to settle their differences and achieve national reconciliation.

The goal is to end political instability in Palestinian occupied territories and the refugees and set up a government of unity and ready for the elections in January.

They are also to reform the security forces, realign the PLO of late Yasser Arafat, and define the situation in Gaza, one of the most controversial items that Hamas rejects.

Egypt holds as key condition to achievement of a lasting reconciliation to make the leading forces quit their differences in favor of a broad, national understanding.
