Egypt Promotes Pact to Solve Darfur Crisis

By Prensa Latina,

Cairo : Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated on Thursday that his country is having intensive meetings with several international authorities to facilitate a global agreement to solve the crisis in the Sudanese region of Darfur.

Aboul Gheit told reporters Cairo is promoting, before the United Nations, its Security Council permanent members and the African Union, a joint offer to meet international demands to activate the peace process in the area.

The global agreement would include a road map, with new dimensions to cover all the political, humanitarian, security and legal aspects related to the crisis, the foreign minister explained.

Aboul Gheit saluted the initiative of the Arab League to form a committee in charge of preparing the negotiations between the government of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and the rebel groups, and considered it the first step of a long way to peace.

He said that most of the armed groups in Darfur have already received the resolution of the Arab League Council which champions the formation of a ministerial committee headed by Qatar, for peace talks in Doha.

Press reports assured that the Sudanese Liberation Movement and the ramifications of the Movement for the Justice and Equality questioned security of the Arab League and accused it of partiality with the government of Khartoum.
