BJP will support UPA if it introduces terror law, says senior party leader Venkaiah

By NNN-PTI,

Mumbai, India : Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said the party will extend support to the UPA Government if it came up with a stringent law against terrorism.

“They (UPA) repealed POTA and TADA… But an extraordinary situation needs an extraordinary law…. If the UPA could muster the political will to introduce a stringent law, we will extend support,” he said on Wednesday.

When asked about the Centre’s plan to introduce a stringent law like POTA, Naidu said the BJP would first go through the law (if it is) introduced by the UPA and see if it is a good and stringent one and in the interest of the country, before supporting it.

Naidu was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a conference of the Rajya Sabha Petitions Committee on issues of restriction on mobile phone usage while driving and in schools and places of worship.

Naidu was, however, of the opinion that the political will to introduce a stringent law was not only lacking in Congress chief Sonia Gandhi or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but in the entire Congress.

When asked about Shivraj Patil being criticised by various leaders after the recent serial blasts, the Rajya Sabha MP said “his resignation will not solve the problem (of terrorism). There should be a change in the mindset of the government.” “The terrorists are not of any religion. A rigorous law and special courts are needed to deal with the terrorism and bring peace,” he said adding that terror suspects should not be granted bail through easy and normal procedure.
