Kolkata: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has dashed off a letter to Home Minister P. Chidambaram complaining about lawlessness and the growing number of political clashes in West Bengal.
“I’ve written a letter to Home Minister P. Chidambaram and informed him about a report that (state) Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has released in the assembly.
“According to the statistics available, altogether 1,720 murders took place between January and October 2009. The total number of abductions across the state was 2,312 and the total number killed in political violence was 845,” Banerjee said at a press conference at her south Kolkata residence.
She alleged that the state’s Left Front government was intentionally launching attacks on people in the name of Maoist activities to trigger violence across the state.
“During the last six months, the state has witnessed enough bloodbath and lawlessness. The state government is so negligent about all the issues. There’s no governance at all in the state,” Banerjee said, while talking about the “alarming” political situation.
“I have brought everything to the home minister’s knowledge,” she added.
She claimed the government was using the entire state machinery to create panic among the people.
