Ranchi : A top Maoist rebel, who escaped from an Andhra Pradesh jail in 1988, was arrested Wednesday in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district, the police said.
Mohammad Hussain, who operated under different names like Shankar Ramakant and Sagar, was caught by the police in Bokaro on a tip-off, but officials declined to reveal the exact location of his arrest.
Hussain, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, is said to be a senior member of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). The police had announced a cash reward of Rs.1 million (Rs.10 lakh) for his capture.
After escaping from a jail in Andhra Pradesh in 1988, Hussain established the Bhagat Singh Yuva Manch to propagate Maoist ideology among youth in Jharkhand, an official said.
The police in Jharkhand have termed his arrest as a big success in their drive against Maoist rebels.
Maoist rebels are active in 18 of Jharkhand’s 24 districts. More than 1,450 people have been killed in Maoist related violence in the last eight years.
