Ahmedabad blasts: 5 charge sheets against 281 terror suspects

Mumbai: Ahmedabad police have filed five more charge sheets in the July 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts and accused 281 people – 140 of them have been declared absconding.

Each of the charge sheets consists of one thousand pages and says the accused had relations with terror outfits Indian Mujahideen and SIMI. As per the media reports the charge sheets also talk about the methods and strategy adopted by the terrorists to make their plans successful.

While revealing similarity between blasts in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Karnataka the charge sheets express doubts that only one organization may be involved in all the blasts. 21 blasts had taken place in various parts of Ahmedabd in Gujarat on July 26, 2008 that had claimed 57 persons and injured 200.

The charge sheets filed in the special court are in connection with the blasts at Sarkhej, Maninagar (Narendra Modi’s constituency), Kalupur and Vatva areas.

In the documents related to Sarkhej blasts, 54 persons have been named accused while 47, including Amir Raza Khan, Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal, are declared absconding. In Maninagar case 44 are named accused and 48 absconding and in Vatva and Kalupur blasts 43 have been declared accused and 45 absconding.

The Ahmedabad Crime branch has treated each blast as a separate case and has been filing charge sheets in each case. The charge sheets in the remaining cases are expected to be filed soon.

The pattern of these five charge sheets reveals an interesting point. Of 21 serial blasts the police have filed five charge sheets for five blasts, and will soon file charge sheet for each blast separately. These five charge sheets have found 281 people involved in blasts in four areas – 141 have been made accused and 140 declared absconding. If the pattern continues for all 21 blasts then, at the end, the police may find more than 1000 people behind the Ahmedabad blasts. Then one can ask: what was the police doing when these 1000 people were planning to execute terror blasts and kill innocents? Or is it practically possible for any terror outfit to conspire and execute such serial attacks with the help of hundreds of people and still remain off the police radar?
