Year 2008 Fruitful for Vietnam, President

Hanoi : Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet affirmed on Monday that under the leadership of the party and the State and with the people’s joint efforts, the country overcame last year’s difficulties and challenges, and reached major achievements.

The economy grew considerably, registering a new record of more than 60 billion dollars in direct foreign investment, and donors promised to contribute over 5 billion dollars for this year’s development, the president pointed out.

On the occasion of the Lunar Year, Triet told VNA news agency that notable progress was achieved in health, education, culture, and the people’s quality of life, particularly in the anti-poverty fight, social security, and national defense.

In the international arena, one of the most important events was Vietnam’s election as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, he indicated.

The Vietnamese president also recalled that more than two years after its entry to the World Trade Organization, the country has increasingly incorporated to the world economy, with growing cooperation relations with foreign markets and nations.

When referring to this year’s prospects and challenges, Triet sustained all efforts will be directed for Vietnam to be an industrialized nation by 2020.
