Patna : Republic Day celebrations in Bihar began early Monday as thousands of people gathered at different parts of the state amid tight security in view of a threat from Maoist rebels.
The main function was held at the Gandhi Maidan here. Governor R.L. Bhatia unfurled the national flag as hundreds of people looked on.
The government has sounded a red alert in the wake of intelligence reports that the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) may target Republic Day celebrations.
“All police stations have been alerted and security arrangements are in place to ensure that the day passes off without any mishap,” Additional Director General of Police Neelmani said.
In the past, Maoists have targeted railways, government buildings and the police on Republic Day.
