Dhaka : Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj, 39, Bangladesh’s youngest minister and son of first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed, has quit the government citing “ethical reasons”, a media report said Tuesday.
Taj, who is state minister for home affairs, submitted his resignation to prime minister Sheikh Hasina Monday, New Age newspaper said quoting unnamed sources.
Hasina said she was not accepting the resignation letter and asked Taj, who was born Jan 5, 1970, to continue with his work.
He cited personal grounds for his resignation but, the sources said, his apparent inability to work to his satisfaction might have prompted the decision.
Lawmaker Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas confirmed that Sohel Taj had tendered his resignation.
Sohel Taj, who was praised by Hasina at the cabinet meeting May 26 for his performance, did not specify any reason for his resignation.
Taj headed a committee to draft policy to counter activities of Islamist militant groups.
His father, late Tajuddin Ahmed was the prime minister when the country declared independence and separated from Pakistan in 1971.
Tajuddin was later jailed and gunned down along with three other leaders in November 1975.
