CBI to probe border fencing scam

BY IANS,

New Delhi: Alleged illegalities in the purchase of barbed fencing wire for installation at borders at a cost of Rs.125 million will now be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“We have registered a case for illegalities in the purchase of barbed fencing wire to be installed at borders. It has been alleged that the concerned army authorities have made purchases through NCCF (National Consumer Cooperative Federation of India Ltd) to avoid the process of tender. The NCCF does not deal in such products,” CBI spokesman Harsh Bhal said in a press statement here Friday.

“It has also been alleged that the supplies have been shown to be made by one Gangyal (Jammu) based firm which does not have the capacity to supply such material. Purchases of barbed wire fencing of Rs.125 million have been made by the army authorities from the firm through NCCF. The role of other officials is also being probed,” he said.

The case was registered in Jammu.

NCCF is the apex federation of the consumer cooperatives in the country. According to its website, it has as its members 136 primary cooperative stores, wholesale societies, state level consumer cooperative federations, national cooperative development corporation and the government of India.

The main objectives of the NCCF were to provide supply support to the consumer cooperatives and other distributing agencies for distribution of consumer goods at reasonable and affordable rates besides rendering technical guidance and assistance to the consumer cooperatives.
