Kolkata: A month-long session of the West Bengal assembly begins Monday against the backdrop of the opposition’s thumping win in the state in the Lok Sabha polls.
With the main opposition Trinamool Congress on a high after its electoral success, the session could be stormy in view of the widespread political clashes and the allegations of inadequate relief distribution in the aftermath of Cyclone Aila.
The session, seen as the second half of the budget session and slated to continue up to July 16 or July 17, will resume discussions on the nitty gritties of the departmental budgets. The first half of the budget session came to an end after the passing of the state general budget and circulation of the departmental budgets.
Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim told mediapersons here Friday that 11 legislators have been elected to the Lok Sabha, of whom nine have already resigned.
He said the Trinamool will continue to enjoy its status as the recognised main opposition party despite its strength going down to 27 after the resignation of five of its legislators who won the Lok Sabha polls.
A party needs to have at least 30 legislators in the house to be recognised as the main opposition.
“However, they can’t bring any no-confidence motion on their own. They have to take the help of other parties,” Halim said.
