Aliyev due in Tehran to hand over ECO presidency to Ahmadinejad

Baku : Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev will depart for Tehran on March 10 to attend the 10th ECO Summit and hand over the ECO presidency to Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Th hand-over ceremony will be held on March 11 shortly after the 10th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit opens in Tehran.

President Aliyev will be in Tehran at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart President Ahmadinejad.

The invitation was submitted to Aliyev by Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki who was in Baku on an official visit on February 20, 2009.

During his stay in Iran and on the sidelines of the 10th ECO Summit, Aliyev is to confer with President Ahmadinejad.

The 18th ECO foreign ministerial meeting started work in Tehran Monday morning
to prepare the grounds for the ECO Summit.

Top officials of the 10 ECO member states are due to review the world’s financial crisis and ways to face the economic challenges.

They will also hold talks on the techniques to accelerate the implementation of agreements between ECO member states and fighting drug trafficking.
