West Bengal hooch toll rises to 11, probe ordered

By IANS,

Kolkata: The toll in the hooch tragedy in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district rose Tuesday to 11 – seven died in Tamluk and the others in city hospitals – while at least 23 were still battling for life, police said.

“At least seven people died in Tamluk itself,” East Midnapore police superintendent Pallab Kanti Ghosh told IANS.

Meanwhile, state police sources confirmed that altogether four people died in city hospitals after drinking poisonous liquor.

The victims had consumed country-made liquor near Ramtarak Market of Mecheda in the Matangini block of the district Monday.

Several people have also been admitted to the S.S.K.M. Hospital here.

The state government Tuesday set up a one-man committee to investigate the tragedy.

“The state administration should probe into the matter and find out who are involved in this hooch tragedy. The perpetrators should be punished,” Biman Bose, chairman of the state’s ruling Left Front, told a press conference here.
