Mamata accuses CPI-M of post-poll violence in West Bengal

By IANS,

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Sunday alleged that after its debacle in the Lok Sabha elections, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that leads West Bengal’s Left Front government was unleashing violence on her party’s workers.

She said cadres of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), which leads the Left Front, torched the houses of nearly 150 Trinamool workers at Raina in Burdwan district.

“We have asked our party workers to maintain restraint. The CPI-M cadres are constantly launching attacks on innocent people, ignoring the mandate of the common people. They are torturing women just like they did in Nandigram,” Banerjee, the newly-appointed railway minister, said at a press conference here.

She said: “The CPI-M has no moral right to remain in power. They are carrying out state-sponsored terrorism using the state armoury.

“We need one or two weeks to settle down and all problems will be taken care of after that. Our ministers will visit the families of all the party members who were either killed or tortured by the CPI-M activists because of their political allegiance.”

The Trinamool tasted success in the Lok Sabha polls winning 19 seats, with its allies Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) bagging six and one respectively.

“No political murders will be tolerated. Almost 15-16 Trinamul congress workers have been killed,” said the minister, adding she has already apprised her cabinet colleagues at the centre of the situation in the state.

Commenting on the allegations of corruption brought by Left Front partners against the state ministers, she said there has been rampant misuse of central funds.

“The extent of corruption is unimaginable in the state which is evident with the front partners themselves complaining about it,” she said, pointing out that there should be proper investigation into these issues to find out the extent of corruption in the state.

Banerjee said her party would continue to work for the betterment of poor people and remain close to the grassroots in the state.

She said that Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi had also been intimated about the unconstitutional acts of the state government, while its own ministers had also admitted that “unethical acts” were committed by the communists.
