Geoscientist Dr. Syed Mehmood Naqvi passes away

New Delhi: Renowned geoscientist and an eminent old boy of Aligarh Muslim University Dr. Syed Mehmood Naqvi passed away in Hyderabad. Prof. L. A. K. Rao, Chairman, Department of Geology, AMU, expressing grief, termed his death as a great loss to this University in particular and to geology fraternity in general. He prayed for the peace to the departed soul and patience to his family.

Dr. Syed Mehmood Naqvi was born in Amroha in 1942. He did his B.Sc. in 1967 and M.Sc. (Geology) in 1969 from Aligarh Muslim University and completed his Ph.D. under the guidance of Late Prof. Faqruddin Ahmad in 1973. He was awarded Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award in 1983, APCOST Award in 1986, National Mineral Award in 1992, INSA Fellowship in 1986, Decennial Award of the Indian Geophysical Union in 2001, Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Science in 2001 and National Mineral Award for Excellence in 2006.

Dr. Naqvi published more than 260 research papers on Indian plate in national and international journals. He was most cited geoscientist of India. Dr. Naqvi supervised about 40 Ph.D. theses and published 6 books on Precambrian rocks of Indian shield.

Dr. Naqvi held several prestigious positions including Director, National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, Vice-President of Mining and Metallurgical Society of India, Secretary, Geological Society of India, Fellow, Geophysical Union, Chairman, INSA Committee for International Commission on lithosphere and Vice President, Indian Association of Applied Geochemists.
