New Delhi: Member of Lok Sabha from Dhubri (Assam) and president of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Maulana Badruddin Ajmal today led a delegation to the Maharashtra Governor SC Jamir to apprise him of the destruction of lives and properties of the Muslim community in the recent communal violence in some districts of the state.
The delegation presented the governor with a memorandum demanding immediate suspension of the DM and Police Commissioner of Sangli district where objectionable photograph of murder of Afzal Khan was displayed on the arches of Ganesh Utsav resulting in the communal violence. The initiation of an independent enquiry against the officers is urgently required so that the confidence of the minority community is restored, the delegation demanded.
Giving details of the incident the memorandum says: Reportedly due to the permission granted by the Police authorities to display the objectionable photograph as stated above at Miraj, the riots have broken out at the places mentioned under the subject line. During the riots the Muslim community was exclusively targeted. Sangli, Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, Miraj, Amberner, Jalgaon and nearby rural areas witnessed sustained and preplanned riots. The properties, shops, vehicles and houses belonging to the minority community were looted and burnt in broad daylight in the presence of the police. Innocent people were attacked by anti social elements with lethal weapons like swords, sticks and sharp weapons.
Hundreds of people were severely injured and a few deaths are also reported. Even children, ladies and senior citizens were not spared. In Sangli and Kolhapur districts, even during curfew hours groups of rioters were freely moving about attacking places of worship (masjids) and ransacking houses and properties belonging to minority community. Muslim priests and devotees present in the masjids were mercilessly beaten.
The delegation of the AIUDF held the Government and the Administration solely responsible for the whole episode. They demanded that victims of the riots should be adequately and urgently compensated; and injured be provided with free medication. Among those arrested innocents should be released forthwith. People of minority community living in the far flung villages should be provided with genuine security.
The delegation comprising AIUDF leaders presented the memorandum before the Governor in a 45 minute long meeting on which Mr. Jamir assured them for positive action and discussion with concerned authorities immediately.
