New Delhi : The government may soon provide a regulatory framework to the protective textiles sector to boost its growth, Textiles Secretary Rita Menon said Tuesday.
“The government is actively considering to provide a regulatory framework to achieve 25 percent growth per annum of technical textiles against business-as-usual growth of 11 percent,” Menon told reporters on the sidelines of a workshop.
Protective textiles include garments and related materials used for protection from harmful chemical environment, extreme temperatures and ballistic protection.
The sector is expected to increase from Rs.1,259 crore in 2007-08 to over Rs.2,000 crore by 2012-13.
Presently, 60-65 percent of the domestic consumption of the protective textiles is met through imports.
Menon said the government was also planning roadshows in seven European countries to attract foreign investment.
“The use of these textiles is very limited and well below the potential in India, primarily because of lack of awareness among various consumer segments like multiplexes, hotels, steel and oil industry,” Menon said.
