By TwoCircles.net Staff Correspondent,

Kochi: The indefinite relay satyagraha organized by the Aikya Samithi (unified group of service organizations in University) in the Calicut University against the decisions of the Syndicate came to an end owing to the move of the Chancellor. The Chancellor of the University and Governor of the state RS Gavai had last day stayed the Syndicate decision to dismiss eight teachers. The service organizations began satyagraha in front of the administrative office of the University on August 25 following the dismissal of the registrar and eight teachers by the Syndicate.

The relay satryagraha was organized by the Samara Samithi (protest committee), formed of five service organizations like the Solidarity Union of Employees, Staff Organisation, Employees’ Forum, Employees’ Centre and Teachers Association. The samithi officials informed that they were putting an end to the protest activities for the time being, and added that they would resume the activities if needed in future.

The Syndicate dismissed the registrar Dr PP Muhammed on August 17 accusing him of several charges including misuse of the official vehicle. He was already under suspension since 2007 on similar charges put by the syndicate. The registrar told TCN that he would question the syndicate decision in the court.

The dismissed teachers have also decided to fight their battle legally. The teachers were appointed by the last syndicate when the UDF was in power. They are now dismissed accusing them of being professionally less qualified amid other charges. The teachers approached the Governor who is also the Chancellor of the University who ruled against the Syndicate decision.
