Some 66 hotels which participated in the campaign March 27 consumed 8,601kw less power, 27 percent lower than their usual consumption every day.

The sky of the UAE capital darkened between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. as the hotels joined offices and private residences in switching off lights. The exercise also reduced carbon emissions by the hotels up to 5,246 kg.

“This exercise had great synergy with tourism sector and Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) which aims to improve the environmental performance of hotels and which laid down a 10 percent energy reduction target for the emirate’s hotels for 2010,” said Nasser Al Reyami, director of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.
